My quick rating - 4.9/10. This flick, directed by Eren Celeboglu & Ari Costa, ventures into the realm of childhood fears and the supernatural. The story revolves around two kids who unwittingly unlock a malevolent force, The Skarrow while playing a seemingly innocent game with their sadistic older cousin (Asa Butterfield). The film's premise holds promise, delving into the classic horror trope of children encountering otherworldly entities. However, the execution falls short of its potential, resulting in a mediocre horror experience. One of the film's notable aspects is its reliance on jump scares, employing loud sounds as its primary method to elicit fear. This may be a strength or weakness in your eyes depending on your tastes. While jump scares can be effective when used sparingly and strategically, this one overindulges in this technique, leading to a predictable and uninspired sense of horror. The reliance on loud noises becomes more of a distraction than a genuine source of fear, diminishing the impact of the scares. I thought the character development in the movie was lackluster, leaving you disconnected from the protagonists. About the only stand-out among the bunch was Natalia Dyer who played her part as Billie quite well. The children's terror could have been more palpable with deeper character exploration, making their plight more relatable and consequently, more frightening. Additionally, the portrayal of the sadistic cousin could have been more nuanced, enhancing the tension and establishing a stronger emotional connection. The concept of The Skarrow, though intriguing, lacks proper explanation and depth. I wanted more, with unanswered questions about the origins and motivations of this malevolent entity. A more comprehensive exploration of The Skarrow's backstory could have added layers to the narrative, making the supernatural elements more engaging and terrifying. Despite all this, the flick does manage to create a few genuinely creepy moments, thanks in part to its atmospheric cinematography and eerie setting. The film's visual elements contribute to a sense of foreboding, occasionally capturing the essence of a chilling horror experience. Yet the second I was drawn in by how it was looking, another scare was blared at you pulling you right back out. It still had enough going for it to keep you entertained, at least found it passable enough even with its heavy-handed approach to jump scares and underdeveloped characters. The film does have its moments of eerie tension and atmospheric visuals, they are just not enough to compensate for its overall lack of substance. Even while typing this, I flip back and forth between recommending and telling you to pass so it falls truly on being average.
