August Underground (2001)

Updated: Jun 21

My quick rating - 2.4/10. Imagine walking down the street and finding an unmarked VHS tape. Curiosity piqued, you take it home and pop it in. What starts off as two men screwing around with a video camera quickly transforms into an ultra-realistic torture sequence where the unidentified psychopaths tape their exploits as they torment and violate a woman tied to a chair. I went into this flick knowing fully well what to expect but it was only 70 minutes and I am always curious to see how far these types of faux "snuff" films will go. The movie starts out with some dude telling his friend to come downstairs to show him something he thinks he'll like. I have no friends who would be so amused when they see a beaten and bloody woman strapped to a chair. Then they proceed to berate her while she sits and bleeds from where her nipple appears to have been sliced off. You can tell right away what kind of flick you are in for. I wonder if Korn has any idea that one of their songs is used in this type of flick? I doubt they would appreciate it. The whole point of these flix is for the shock value and this entry really didn't have any. The main characters are extremely annoying to start off with so you are stuck with their immature shtick for the whole time. The way it is filmed is all first person camera so it does have that impromptu feel to each portion of it. Director/Killer Fred Vogel took each set of cuts to set up the next scene but kept it looking so fluid with these two either in the one guy's basement or randomly attacking a couple in a convenience store. But as I said, it is to astonish you with the violence and the best this stupid-ass movie could do was gross you out by making their prisoner eat her own shit. The suggestion is bad enough but everyone knows the reality so it loses the sting. Plus it is handled in such a silly way. I know that is meant to make it seem all the more real like this is some dude's home video, but not many are going to buy that. I have seen plenty of these flicks including others made for the August Underground trilogy and this is by far the tamest along with the lamest of the bunch. If you are looking to get into extreme horror, this might be a good starting point since it isn't too extreme (there may be other versions of this, so maybe I ran across a toned-down one) but it will give you an idea of the style that is predominantly used.

There are only a few places you can stream this one from.
