Blue Beetle (2023)

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

My quick rating - 6,1/10. Nana is the highlight! Blue Beetle takes us on a journey through the life of a recent college graduate whose dreams of a bright future take an unexpected turn when he stumbles upon an alien artifact known as the Scarab. While the film offers moments of genuine entertainment, it also struggles with certain inconsistencies that prevent it from fully taking flight. One of the film's strong points is the performance of the cast, with Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) serving as a relatable protagonist. His journey from a hopeful college grad to an unexpected superhero is engaging, and the character's development is well-executed. However, the movie occasionally feels hokey and fails to define Jaime's superpowers in a clear and consistent manner. This can be frustrating for viewers who expect a more structured exploration of his abilities. The special effects used to depict these powers vary in quality, with some moments that truly shine and others that are laughable. In terms of humor, the flick provides a mixed bag. The film tries to infuse humor into its storytelling, but it doesn't always land effectively. The inconsistency in humor can create a tonal imbalance, making it challenging for audiences to fully connect with the characters and the story. Nana (Adriana Barraza) as was my first thought at the finale, emerges as a standout highlight. Her presence adds depth and emotional resonance to the story, offering a sense of grounding amidst the superhero spectacle. Her portrayal and the depth of her character's interactions with Jaime provide some of the film's most memorable moments. And some of the funniest. Another surprising comedic highlight comes from George Lopez, who adds an element of humor that works well within the context of the story. His performance provides a welcomed levity and comic relief that tried to balance the film's tone although didn't always hit for me. It is undoubtedly a film with potential, and it successfully introduces us to a lesser-known superhero. While it does have its flaws it does offer a glimpse of a promising superhero origin story. With a stronger focus on character development and refining its special effects, the Blue Beetle franchise could become a compelling addition to the incredibly varied DC superhero genre. It may not reach the heights of some of its cinematic counterparts, but it sets the stage for a potentially exciting future for the character and the franchise.
