Damsel (2024)

My quick rating - 5.8/10. Interesting to see Millie Bobby Brown play a young woman whose marriage to a charming prince turns into a fierce fight for survival when she's offered up as a sacrifice to a fire-breathing dragon. The flick offers a delightful twist on the classic fairytale formula, with MBB taking center stage as a young woman thrust into a perilous adventure. The film follows her character as she navigates the unexpected challenges of marriage to a charming prince, only to find herself facing a fiery dragon as a sacrificial offering. One of the film's standout features is its impressive CGI, which brings the fantastical elements of the story to life with stunning visual effects. The dragon sequences are particularly thrilling, adding an exhilarating layer to the simplistic story and enhancing the sense of danger the protagonist faces. The flick provides an entertaining adventure and does so within the familiar confines of the fairytale genre. Despite its enjoyable premise and strong performances, the film ultimately treads familiar ground without offering any groundbreaking insights or innovations. Nevertheless, it still delivers an engaging adult fairytale experience, blending the elements of adventure, and fantasy into an entertaining package. Millie Bobby Brown shines in her role, showcasing her versatility as an actress and anchoring the film with her charismatic presence. However, they completely missed the boat on utilizing Angela Bassett who plays the mother-in-law Lady Bayford. How talent such as that goes basically unused is beyond me. It won't revolutionize the fairytale genre, but it offers an enjoyable and visually impressive ride for audiences seeking a lighthearted adventure with a touch of magic.

This one is exclusive to Netflix.
