My quick rating - 5.7/10. This is a bizarre one. The plot itself is kind of hard to explain. Not that it is complex, just that it just makes so little sense in the "why" the kids are held basically captive at the drive-in. The post-apocalyptic world is interesting in an 80s sort of way. The streets are battlegrounds, and the main character is difficult to finger as to what he is exactly. Hero? Loser? Just a guy, which is my pick. So in the community of the drive-in, we are also introduced to an array of characters. Each is more cliched and strange than the next. And underneath this simple escape flick is a really buried message about racism and cultural equality. Out of the blue, as you are laughing at the punk rockers getting beat up and fighting with cricket bats, the next thing you know you are hearing about the drive-in owner allowing to many "slopes" and other slurs against races that I am guessing were migrating in force into Australia at the time. It is funny, a little cryptic and a cult flick that still has something to say.
