Den of Thieves (2018)

Updated: May 20, 2021

My quick rating - 7,3/10. What an excellent bank heist flick. Definitely the best I have seen in years. Casting on both sides is great as this flick pits an ingenious bank robbery crew against the barely above the law LA unit of elite cops. Gerard Butler is again showing off his action role chops and taking a small break from the "Has Fallen" series to lead up the team against Pablo Schreiber and his merry men (dumb joke, his name is Merriman in the movie) in a winner take all heist that has never been done before; The LA federal reserve. The story itself though is far more than that chess game laid out in front of you, the movie also expertly crafts personal relationships in along with turning an informant and injecting him into the criminal group. Even with all the plot this movie is throwing at you, it still moves along at a nice pace and doesn't feel rushed fitting anything in. And at 140 minutes, at no point was I bored. The camera work is so well done to give depth to the scenes when needed and pull in tight for expression. There is also no shortage of bullets as both sides have no problem toting far more than a handgun. So if a scene needs to turn downtown LA into Beirut, so be it. With robberies being thrown at you, and all the intricate details to how the whole master plan is coming to be, it would be a crime for me to share anymore. All I can say is must watch for anyone who enjoys a master crafted crime thriller that also plays heavy on the action.
