Devil's Den (2006)

Updated: Jul 18, 2023

My quick rating - 4,4/10. Horror I haven't seen, that is all I know. Apparently writer Mitch Gould has seen From Dusk till Dawn. First we have wannba Ricky Schroder who cannot act his way out of a cardboard box (Devon Sawa) and then the opposite Ken Foree who has appeared in some damn good flix in his time (Dawn of the Dead anyone?) The first half of the movie is busy cementing the sleazy strip club atmosphere for us. We have to really believe just how shady it is, which it really isn't at all. You would think the emptiness of the establishment might be a sign that something isn't right, but hey, there goes me thinking again. But as I mentioned, this one borrows the second half of From Dusk till Dawn painfully. The budget doesn't allow for it to rise up to those levels however it does give the cast some leeway in the comedic freedom to attempt to entertain and often succeeds in doing so. You also cannot really go wrong when you run into Kelly Hu in the club and she is along to help in your fight for survival against the demon hordes. There is the obligatory love interest here in Candy, played by Karen Maxwell, who needlessly complicates the story. Again, all mapped out in other flix you have seen. Still, it has a certain charm to it that may not make it a classic but certainly keeps you entertained. I found myself laughing along with the movie as often as directly at it so either way, it did its job. The effects are nothing to boast about and the location is pretty damn cramped but it just has that feel of a horror/comedy flick that fans of the genre should at least check out for the giggles of it and most likely never admit, nor revisit, seeing again.

Amazon among a few other streamers have it along with Tubi for free.
