My quick rating - 5.4/10. Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) desperately need to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way. I recently caught Matt Damon on the Colbert show and his appearance prompted me to check out this comedy flick.
Drive-Away Dolls offers a comedic road trip with a mix of good laughs and stumbling moments. The film benefits from a strong cast, with characters that are both quirky and relatable. Jamie's carefree attitude contrasts well with Marian's reserved nature, creating a dynamic that drives much of the humor and character development.
There are certainly funny moments scattered throughout the film, often stemming from the interactions between Jamie and Marian as they navigate the challenges of their journey. The comedic timing of the cast helps to elevate these moments, keeping you entertained. However, this flick struggles with its handling of sexuality. While it's refreshing to see LGBTQ+ representation in film, the way it's portrayed here feels forced at times, weighing down the otherwise lighthearted tone of the story. Rather than naturally integrating into the narrative, it can feel like an unnecessary addition that detracts from the overall enjoyment of the film. Despite this, it still manages to deliver an enjoyable ride, thanks in large part to its engaging characters and amusing scenarios. It may not be perfect, but for those looking for a fun road trip comedy with a good cast, it's worth a watch.
