Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Updated: Jul 15, 2023

My quick rating - 7,3/10. I have been looking forward to this one ever since I heard of its existence. Three siblings find an ancient vinyl that gives birth to bloodthirsty demons that run amok in a Los Angeles apartment building and thrusts them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. As a fan of the horror genre, I always appreciate a captivating introduction that immerses you in the story from the get-go, and this film certainly achieves that. Right from the beginning, heads start rolling, setting the stage for a blood-soaked and intense experience before the credits even begin. One of the strengths of this incantation of my favorite horror franchise lies in its ability to create an unsettling atmosphere. The claustrophobic nature of the apartment building adds to the tension, making every moment feel like a fight for survival. The film successfully blends elements of supernatural horror with psychological terror, keeping you on the edge of your seats. The performances in the movie are commendable, with the cast effectively conveying the fear and desperation of their characters. I thought Mirabai Pease did a nice job taking over the movie from the start as our leading lady. They all brought a sense of authenticity to the story, making the audience empathize with their plight. The practical effects and gory visuals are also well-executed, providing the necessary shock factor all of us fans of the Evil Dead flix expect. You may find the plot familiar, as it follows the formula of a group of people trapped in a haunted location. However, Evil Dead Rise manages to inject its own unique twists and surprises to keep things interesting. I have to say this film delivers on its promises. It embraces the legacy of the franchise while adding its own distinctive flavor. Fans of the Evil Dead series will likely appreciate the film's homage to the original while finding plenty of fresh scares to enjoy. I was quite worried about this one but it delivers an entertaining and gruesome experience for fans of the franchise. I liked the direction they were able to take it while still injecting fresh elements into the mix. It captured the essence of what makes the Evil Dead series my all-time favorite and hopefully this will bring in a whole new audience as well. With impressive practical effects and a sense of dread that never lets up, this installment is a solid addition to the Evil Dead universe. It certainly satisfies the craving for blood, scares, and the iconic Deadite mayhem that fans have come to expect.
