Halloween Ends (2022)

Updated: Oct 27, 2022

My quick rating - 4,7/10. I have been procrastinating on reviewing this one since I did watch it last weekend. The reason for that is simple, expectations+final result=crap. After David Gordon Green decided to resurrect this iconic horror series in 2018, he took a slightly different turn than all the previous incantations of the story, he went from the end of the first Halloween directly into a new story arc. This flick had moderate success and was a welcome addition to the story. Then came Halloween Kills which critics blasted and personally I thought was actually better than his first offering. Now we are onto the big trilogy finish. This movie destroys not only what has been built in the previous two but also the entire lore of Michael Myers in general. Somehow they have relegated Myers to a supporting cast role who is along for the ride to mentor some young adult who wants to rebel against his small town for treating him as an outsider. First off, the movie begins with a scene explaining why this dude (Rohan Campbell) is an outcast and does so effectively. But this addition points out a big flaw here, you don't see Michael for half of the movie, literally. The movie is billed as the final showdown between Laurie and Michael but we are subjected to the teen angst of poor Corey and Allyson (Andi Matichak) who is playing the granddaughter. Far too much time is wasted on Corey trying to learn how to be a serial killer and even though they are working that angle so badly, it comes off so poorly written. There is no reason for it and it obliterates everything you know about Michael Myers the moment the kid is allowed to survive their first encounter. I am also unsure about the miracle cure for Corey needing glasses in this flick. You'll understand that comment once you see this. So what seemed to be a partial passing of the torch to a new killer while ending the story with the old are both destroyed in one swoop here. The ending climax is so full of why-in-hell moments that if I gave spoilers, you wouldn't bother watching this yourself. Scene after scene of such utter stupidity that I was just shaking my head. If you are here for those quality kills, they are non-existent. Aside from a tongue spinning around on a turntable, there isn't anything to grab your attention. If you enjoy those subtle and creepy scenes such as Michael in the doorway or peering through a window, there is NOT a single memorable camera shot as such in this whole mess. It is just a budgeted flick with proper use of the mechanics to make a movie that goes on with such a whimper. They made sure to end it in such a way that you KNOW this trilogy is done. But there is NO doubt in my mind that it will be rebooted yet again down the line and hopefully, the next ones to pick this up do the original story some justice with an end that doesn't give you a half hour of "give me a damn break" moments up until a fucking parade down Main St. If you want to say this is far worse, be my guest but don't let expectation rule and if you want to say it is far better, fine but don't allow tradition to dictate the truth either.

Hitting theaters and streaming simultaneously, you can check it out on Peacock premium if you aren't going to the cinema.
