My quick rating - 5.0/10. This giant spider movie did something I didn't expect at all. It actually tried to be serious. Stranger still, it succeeded in doing so. The story itself wasn't great but instead of just being all cheese about a big ass spider running around killing people, we had a family that they took the time to attempt to make you care about with a backstory. They also gave the spider an old folklore tale of its inception. The underlying theme, though, is still there, and it isn't all that frightening either. An ancient, cursed spider queen's curse is entombed in an "egg" looking thing in an artifact collector's house and is released when a poorly explained burglar breaks it. This is where our killer arachnid comes in and is set on murdering the family. The effects are as expected, and in the end, I was leaning more towards drama. But no, giant spiders killing falls into horror even if the family's dysfunction really was the focus.
