My quick rating - 3.2/10. We have another anthology flick of sorts. Paula Brasca is a late-night radio DJ with a program where people call to tell her real horror stories, but she keeps getting nagged by an obsessed fan. While the film might have had a very interesting premise, it failed in terms of delivering actual scares, and I found myself begging for more. The film centers around Candy, played by Brasca, a charismatic radio host who hosts a popular late-night show where she lets listeners call in and tell her real-life horror stories. Things take a twist when an obsessive fan starts harassing her and blurs the lines between reality and fiction. Herein lies the best setup for a tense, psychological horror story, but unfortunately, Nightmare Radio: The Night Stalker fails to capitalize on it. The biggest problem with this flick is the lousy set of horror stories that it brings together. While most anthologies can boast at least a few hits and a whole load of misses, Nightmare Radio: The Night Stalker hugely leans towards the latter. The tales are underdeveloped and fail to deliver the bone-chilling feeling desired in horror movies. Though some segments drag on, others feel extremely rushed, and the overall experience comes off as inconsistent. At the same time, much could have been done to improve the overall movie flow-tight editing, and a more cohesive narrative structure would have helped the movie maintain constant interest and engagement.
Brasca plays the plight of a radio host in mortal danger with realistic urgency, giving this flick much-needed vitality since, being an anthology film, it falls way short of the standard set by its elder brethren, making one crave more effectively told and chilling yarns. It's bloody rare that the narrator's story for this type of flick ends up outdoing every tale in the anthology, but that was most definitely the case with this flick. Perhaps they should have done a full-length on Candy trying to survive the night instead of mixing some super-awful horror shorts along the way.
