My quick rating - 5,5/10. I am quite glad that stuff such as this is finding their way over a bit easier now. Not that this is some monumental flick like Parasite was, but still entertaining and wouldn't have found a way to my screen a decade ago. It opens up quite nicely and I have to say I was genuinely really enjoying the narrative this one laid out. It opens with a schoolgirl being hunted by some monster and killed. It then cuts to Asuka (Kanna Hashimoto) who hears a voice telling her the 8 dismemerbered parts of a girls body needs to be found somewhere that her and her 5 friends attend school. Immediately they are now hunted by the "Red Person" and dispatched in gory fashion. But then the fun begins as Asuka wakes up as if nothing happened and you quickly realize that they are stuck in a time loop. I was immediately looking forward to another Happy Death Day scenario but then it decided to take a Japanese teen drama approach. Instead of being a straight Japanese horror flick as it alluded to, it spends entirely too much time on the group of kids coming back and being overly satisfied with the idea of being killed without consequences. It was almost distracting the first time they just shrug it off like another day at the beach. So for a good portion of this, the pressing nature of living each day to die at night becomes second to them bonding with each other, developing romance and all the other stuff that tends to happen in coming of age flix. So I personally was a bit torn here. The flick as a whole looks good and is polished enough with a fine set of young actors (which I listened to dubbed) but the balance just wasn't exactly what I wanted to see. However, I still enjoyed the entire journey since the "Red Person" isn't forgotten and the second portion of the monster is simple yet creepy as all hell. Enjoyable enough for me and they also left it open for a sequel. I just kind of hope they gie a bit more weight to the horror in the next one.
Netflix exclusive right now if you know what I mean ;)
