Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (2024)

My quick rating - 5.4/10. Zack Snyder's scifi epic returns. As does the main cast which was a big part of the success of the first flick, including Anthony Hopkins as the voice of Jimmy. Kora (Sofia Boutella) and surviving warriors prepare to defend Veldt, their new home, alongside its people against the Realm. The warriors face their pasts, revealing their motivations before the Realm's forces arrive to crush the growing rebellion. All this ended up being was a dose of insight as to each of the characters' motivation for being in this fight against the bad guys. AND it was also just a really long ass firefight against the Realm, the evil empire that had been established in the first flick. Part two takes place immediately following the initial flick and doesn't feel much like a sequel but more of a straight continuation. I have to assume there just wasn't a need for a 4 hour sci-fi flick (or potentially more) in the cards for Netflix. The sequences do look spectacular and you can clearly see where the reported 83 million dollar budget was spent. I will say it wasn't spent much on the story itself since this is still a pretty dull weak farmers rebel against the evil dominant empire story. In other words, everything so far in these two flix have looked really damn good, down to the costume design but there just isn't much in the plotline to really captivate you. Aside from a slight twist at the end of this one that does open the doors to a sequel, there just hasn't been much to mentally involve you with either the characters you have met or the village they are willing to die to protect. The first flick did the job of explaining the struggle while this movie seems to exist only to mesmerize you with gun battles and special effects. If they hadn't been so well done, this really would've been a mess. As it sits, I enjoy my science fiction so I am still not put off by where this is going but if the ship isn't straightened out soon, I don't think we will be seeing a lot more of this newly created universe.

This one is a Netflix exclusive if you are interested.
