Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City (2021)

Updated: Jan 14, 2022

My quick rating - 6,5/10. I know, not Xmas at all but I have been waiting for this one. I am sure I'll push the review off until after anyways. And I did obviously. I really liked this movie. The first string of movies started off fine and turned into an action-packed mayhem vehicle to show off Milla Jovovich. Trust me, I am not complaining about any of that. This reincarnation changes gears and goes straight to the game's roots. The backstory of the Redfield siblings sets up a creepy story that easily could've been a fully developed flick on its own but instead is used to bring us into Raccoon City. All the characters from the first game are introduced and used just enough to make any player of the game say "Finally" yet draw you in enough that you didn't need to be a gamer to follow along. The familiarity just makes it more fun. The teams are divided with one being sent to the mansion to investigate. Scenes are literally plucked out of the first game almost verbatim. They all are stuck in the city where a mysterious virus had taken over the population and turned them into zombies. The first half or so plays out more like a traditional horror flick/game would but does switch gears to allow for more of the story and action to take over. There are your typical greedy corporation leaders, and the explanation to what truly is going on along with the relationship to the siblings is all explained out decently enough. Especially if you take into account this is all from a video game that came out in 1996. The cinematography keeps all the action looking very fluid and camerawork doesn't delve into the shakey handi-cam nonsense. Special effects were all done well even when purposely looking hokey. All the little nods to the game make this an extremely enjoyable experience. I like how this has come about and can see the sequels on the way. Bring on the hounds (they even logically explained out the initial sighting of one).
