Risen (2021)

My quick rating - 4,4/10. Not very often that a movie ends, and then continues for an additional 30 minutes. This is really unfortunate since my rating basically is all from the first 2/3rds of this flick. Science Fiction is definitely the most difficult genre to tackle when making a low-budget film. But this movie does use simplicity in more suggesting something is grandiose than it actually looking gigantic. Also, a shame that the acting in this is pretty distracting. Good thing there is a lot of time wasted just looking around and contemplating. A small town is hit by a meteor and turns the atmosphere immediately around it uninhabitable for humans. It also renders many that come into contact into zombies, basically. The way the team that is called in to investigate this whole thing is really bizarre and not very believable at all. But beyond that, the story itself was interesting enough to keep my attention as they piece together what is going on with the aliens and what their intentions are. They really had something going in the story and overcoming the budget constraints (some people will complain but it was better than trying school-level CGI). Then, as I mentioned, the story is resolved. At least the main story of the aliens coming, do they conquer or not, etc. Instead, we are then subjected to almost a complete side story that should have been spliced into the initial hour or so but instead was edited in to make a completely unnecessary ending. It does give a bit of character twist but overall aside from the interesting point of wondering about scientists communicating with aliens for the first time as incredible, yet if some everyday person happens to do so and calls the aliens here it becomes criminal. I thought that was a novel idea. Only good if a SciFi fan and very patient for shortcomings.
