Silent Night (2021)

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

My quick rating - 5,8/10. Have to lead with this. Do NOT watch this with your younger kids. And I almost missed reviewing it. Oops. Not sure this is the one that is going to hit your Xmas rotation of flix unless you would like to be amused by kids that talk like truck drivers for half the movie and then end up completely depressed by the end of it. I had no idea what I was getting into minus the summary (which is close enough to a spoiler so stop if you want to be completely surprised) "Nell, Simon, and their son Art is ready to welcome friends and family for what promises to be a perfect Christmas gathering. Perfect except for one thing: everyone is going to die." I kind of figured some strange slasher flick on its way but instead, I got an inventive drama starring Keira Knightley hosting a Christmas party for family and friends so they can all just happily KILL THEMSELVES. Apparently, there are gases being released that are going to sweep through the country and painfully wipe out the people so the idea here is to take a pill and just die before it gets you. The interactions between the characters are really well done. The kids in this absolutely steal the show though, constantly bickering and swearing at each other while the parents take it in stride and give pretentious responses to it all. I really enjoyed the dialogue that was written up for this one. There are some lulls throughout and of course the indecisive nature of what they are all actually doing becomes a source of conflict. That and the whole thought of maybe it just isn't even true. A few little twists that they plant in the story so it keeps you wondering. It may not be the best movie but it surely is one thing. Memorable.
