My quick rating - 5,2/10. I had the trailer up on my website for a bit since it looked quite amusing—time to check it out. I don't care how insanely stupid it was, I had fun with this one. This flick is a horror-comedy film directed by Matthew Goodhue, that takes a daring leap into the absurd, blending the cuteness of a sloth with the horror of a murder mystery. Right off the bat, the opening scene prepares you for what is about to happen for the next 93 minutes. The story follows Emily Young (Lisa Ambalavanar), a determined senior vying for her sorority's presidency, who believes adopting a sloth could be her ticket to success. However, what starts as a quirky, feel-good story quickly takes a dark turn when the sloth becomes the prime suspect in a series of mysterious fatalities. One of the film's standout features is the adorable sloth itself. Unlike many flix that resort to CGI, this flick uses a hand puppet, giving the sloth an endearing charm that adds a unique layer to the film. The campy movements, especially during the killing scenes, provide an oddly delightful contrast, making it a memorable aspect of the movie. Tiff Stevenson, known for her stand-up comedy, steps into the role of the sorority den mother. Despite her comedic background, her performance in the film doesn't quite hit the mark. The humor often falls flat, missing opportunities to elevate the comedic elements of the story. However, the film's sheer audacity and willingness to embrace its own absurdity make it oddly entertaining. The flick is undeniably ridiculous, with a plot that ventures into the realm of the ludicrous. Yet, it managed to capture my attention with its sheer outrageousness. While some jokes may not land and the storyline might be far-fetched, the movie succeeds in providing a fun, albeit peculiar, viewing experience. In the end, I doubt this film will be remembered as a cinematic masterpiece or a comedy classic. Still, the film offers an enjoyable and lighthearted escape for those willing to suspend their disbelief and dive headfirst into a world where a cute sloth turns into a murderous beast. Despite its flaws, it's hard not to find some guilty pleasure in the madness of Slotherhouse.
