My quick rating - 6.9/10. Well, this flick was a supernatural thriller trip that takes a refreshing twist on the age-old tale of summoning spirits. What sets this film apart is its unique premise, as a group of friends stumbles upon a gruesome secret: the ability to communicate with the other side using an embalmed hand. Finally, a horror film that ditches the clichéd Ouija board! The film begins with an intriguing concept that immediately hooks the audience. As the friends experiment with their newfound power, the tension steadily mounts, and you can't help but be drawn into their dark and dangerous journey. The scares are not only good but genuinely terrifying, leaving you on the edge of your seat and occasionally hiding your eyes behind your hands. Ok, maybe not take you that far but it sounded good. Visually, the movie is a feast for the eyes. The cinematography and direction are top-notch, with expertly crafted scenes that capture the eerie and foreboding atmosphere of the story. The use of shadows, lighting, and visual effects add to the overall sense of dread and unease, making for an immersive and chilling viewing experience. One of the standout aspects of "Talk to Me" is its commitment to a dark and original narrative. While it treads familiar supernatural territory, it manages to inject a fresh perspective into the genre. The film delves deep into the consequences of playing with forces beyond one's control, and it doesn't shy away from exploring the psychological and emotional toll it takes on the characters. The cast's acting is commendable, with the ensemble delivering convincing performances that draw you further into their descent into the supernatural abyss. Their fear, desperation, and guilt feel palpable, making it easy to empathize with their predicament. Sophie Wilde stands out as the heroine who does a nice balancing act of the fun yet completely irresponsible one. Her vulnerability did end up leading me to actually care what her fate would be which tends to be rare. It is nice to see a flick finally standing out as a horror film that manages to deliver good scares, stunning visuals, and a story with a dark and original twist. It was nice to see what Danny Philippou & Michael Philippou could come up with after working on the phenomenal The Babadook. If you're in the mood for a supernatural thriller that offers more than the usual fare, this is a must-watch and certainly a great first full-length feature for the twins jumping off of YouTube and into the big time.
