Tar (2020)

Updated: Jul 3, 2023

My quick rating - 4,5/10. I was really hoping this was going to be in the vein of the cult classic "The Stuff" from 1985. No luck. Anyway, this starts out with an amusing beginning. We have the elder wise man telling the tell of the La Brea tar pits. I'll leave why it is funny up to you when you see it (the no spoiler rule). The story here is a monster that lives in the tar pits is released and goes on a killing spree. The whole movie had a very nostalgic feel to it in the narrative and how it plays out. The jokes are tongue in cheek for the most part, often way too obvious. But again, going for that old feel. Characters are fine for who they are supposed to be minus one really annoying dude. Surprisingly decent camerawork and the aesthetics need for a larger budget film which means the makers know what they are doing. But in the end it suffers from a mediocre story that leads to the worst possible ending they could have. Not the lack of story ending, the "we completely forgot how to do everything we demonstrated in the first 75 minutes of the movie" and finish up with a mess that is incomprehensible of what is going on. I can't tell if the editor was drunk and just put the clips into random order but it really distracted from the rest of this. The monster looked pretty stupid (yes, I wanted the tar to be the oozing monster) and the death scenes were lackluster. Viewing is entirely up to you but if you can get past its faults, you may get some entertainment from it just don't expect a return viewing nor a coherent ending.

You can check this one out on a few streamers including Amazon.
