Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

Updated: Feb 20, 2022

My quick rating - 5,9/10. I read some reviews when I noticed IMDB had this at 5,1 and I was wondering, what were people expecting? Some sequel to the 1974 classic made with as much creative genius and raw emotion as that flick? Did people not see the many sequels, etc.? I personally was expecting a huge dud and instead got a decent slasher flick that ramps up the violence and gore a bit along with trying to stay as direct as possible to the original story. Definitely not perfect by any means since the writing and directing varied between complete nostalgia to totally cheesy. But when it came down to being Leatherface, they brought in the kills with absolutely no remorse. I couldn't at all get behind the main characters since the women looked 12, and the male lead was portrayed a bit strange. Minor casting gripes, are not a huge deal. I liked bringing back the one survivor from the original as a waiting vengeful woman who knew Leatherface would return someday. But let's assume our brutish killed was 18 in the original, that puts him at 66 now roaming the town slaughtering an entire busload of 20 somethings with ease. Speaking of, I will say that scene alone is worth your time since it is a gory good time. And when the victims initially see our killer enter the bus and whip their phones out to stream it, cheesy meets reality since you know damn well that would completely happen. ("That looks so fake", watch those comments LMAO) The town which didn't exist in the first one looked perfect for the middle of nowhere setting for such a thing to happen. That is another place the writing let us down, a very vague reason as to why these people were there in the first place. The setup as to why after all these years he is back killing again is fine although makes you wonder why it hadn't happened any sooner. At least our survivor Olwen Fouéré looked and played the part as I would've expected even if that age thing again should come into play in her actions (she appeared properly, just a bit on the agile side) It does start off a bit slow which is odd for how poorly setup it is but once it gets going, that 83 minutes pops up quick. I was overall fine with it and can live with possibly setting up more even if that seemed a stretch. The ending will be for you to decide, no spoilers here.
