My quick rating - 8,0/10. I have already heard great things about his Oscar nominee. And for very good reason as two things stuck out to me. First is the fact you will have to be in the right kind of mood for this flick. The second is the incredible performances by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. You have to realize this is a dark comedy that explores the complex dynamics of friendship and the devastating consequences that can arise when those relationships break down. The film follows two lifelong friends who find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship. The resulting fallout is nothing short of alarming and takes the audience on a rollercoaster ride of what each character will do next in their bizarre struggle for acceptance. What sets this film apart is its excellent performances. Both Farrell and Gleeson deliver nuanced and layered performances that capture the intricacies of their characters' relationship. The chemistry between the two is volitale, making it all the more devastating when their friendship falls apart. The flick also hides a bit of dark humor that may not be apparent at first. The absurdity of the situations that arise as a result of their broken friendship provides some much-needed levity amidst the tense and dramatic moments. The humor is never overdone or forced, making it a welcome respite from the heavier themes that are presented. I found this one gripping and emotional that really showcases the talents of its cast and crew. Martin McDonagh does a fantastic job of reeling this one together and the backdrop of the remote Irish island landscapes is captivating. While it may not be for everyone, those who appreciate dark comedies and complex character studies will find much to enjoy here and definitely deserving of an Oscar nomination for best picture.
