The Bigfoot Trap (2023)

Updated: Feb 11

My quick rating - 4.7/10. I was hoping to get a unique twist on the classic Bigfoot legend, offering a blend of crime and maybe a bit of horror. The Bigfoot Trap attempts to blend the fascinating world of tabloid journalism, urban legends, and the lengths people will go to create a compelling story. The plot centers around a tabloid journalist, played by Tyler Weisenauer, who embarks on a journey to rural America to investigate a man's ambitious quest to capture the elusive sasquatch.

Initially, it appears like another creature feature, but it later reveals a different twist as it enters the realm of crime and suspense. For a low-budget film, it is quite clever in exploring the differences between reality and fiction. The reputation of the protagonist online is already established; thus, a war between the two begins. The mastermind behind the maze, who has his own bundle of secrets as well, decides to get even with the journalist by putting him into a whirlpool of confusion. The film then takes a new turn, shifting to a psychological drama film.

The film’s pacing is good, revealing the journey that the protagonist takes, including some comical moments and scary scenes. The interaction between the bigfoot expert, Red (Zach Lazar Hoffman), and his best friend, who masterminds the plot, brings some comic touch and brotherly affection to the movie. However, when the movie tries to change to a crime flick, there are some parts where the movie seems to stall, such that some scenes just drag on or become disjointed. Unfortunately, I saw what was coming here way too early, which dampened the effect of the whole thing. There won't be any spoilers, so that may not affect your viewing.

Performance-wise, the cast delivers adequate performances. Weisenauer captures the essence of an ambitious journalist, oscillating between skepticism and intrigue. The person behind the sasquatch trap is a mysterious ingredient in the story, as seen in his calculated demeanor. The chemistry between the two is intriguing, as we are left wondering what is really going on. The film has some mixed presentations along with the visuals. The serene landscapes of rural America serve as a perfect backdrop to the unfolding mystery, while the sasquatch sequences lean in heavy toward suspenseful ambiance.

However, the film does go into bumpy territory because quite often, it struggles to find the right tone-it goes from an almost full-on comedy atmosphere in its first half hour to a latter, more serious and heavy in nature crime-focused narrative. Genre transition isn't always perfect, and the exploration of truth vs fabrication, with the cast, makes this film worth watching for anyone seeking some new perspective on the Bigfoot legend. I had enough fun with it to say it may not be great, but it did just enough to keep me entertained.

You have some streaming options along with Amazon to consider.
