The Last House On Dead End Street (1973)

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

My quick rating - 5,3/10. There were a couple messed up movies that came out the year I was born. Finally getting to see this one since finding it was tough. It pops up when I am not looking. Read the story about the evolution of this one, very interesting (Wikipedia has a decent sum up) I just remember reading it was someone's attempt at making a snuff film and that it had been destroyed. I noticed the version that I am watching and those floating around are 77 minutes long which is heavily edited since the original was 175 minutes. So rating this is quite difficult knowing that a hundred minutes are missing which may or may not have made the story more coherent OR it may have just been more drug fueled laughter and ever increasing violence. It only takes minutes to tell this is nothing like it was supposed to be with the voice not nearly matching the scenes, most likely not even the actors speaking. Seems to have a very anti-pornographic message to it. There is also a large amount of laughing during death scenes which I am sure can be contributed to the drugs they were obviously using while filming this flick. Reading the credits is also interesting since all the actors since it was released have actually revealed who they were but when the movie was made, they were all using pseudonyms. So I am comparing IMDB now to what is on the screen, all different. This is definitely the type of movie you will either appreciate for the time and what they achieved or immediately dismiss it is shock value trash and turn it off. I will admit that there are some really well shot scenes in this flick but they will be sandwiched in there with some really terrible stuff. I am one who can appreciate this and I can see what he was trying to do, well, a couple things really. One absolutely was to gross you out and make you think it was real. The gore has such a realistic look even though yo can very clearly tell exactly what is going on to make it happen. But the strange porn message I was picking up on along with possibly trying to point out the direction the entertainment industry as a whole was headed was a bit too smart for their own time. It really is a must see for any film buff for many reasons I have pointed out. Just remember what you are getting yourself into. And please don't mistake this review as saying this is a "good" movie. My opinion also has a lot to do with timing and appreciation but I know fully well this will NOT appeal to everyone nor should it.

Tubi seems to be the only streamer that possibly has this one right now. Unless you want to see an awful quality version on the Internet Archive.
