The Marvels (2023)

My quick rating - 5.5/10. I haven't heard great things about this one but that won't stop me from watching. This flick brings together a formidable trio: Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), as they face the consequences of a destabilized universe. While the premise is promising, the execution falls short in several aspects. There is one thing you will notice right away that Marvel is doing RIGHT that the DC universe is totally screwing up. They are keeping the same current actors to play their roles on both small and big screens (Vellani). The film starts with Carol reclaiming her identity from the Kree and seeking revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. However, unintended consequences lead her to shoulder the burden of a universe in chaos. When a wormhole connects her with Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, they must join forces to save the day. Despite its potential, the movie struggles with cringe-worthy scenes and a forced attempt at appealing to a different audience. Jump roping and a musical number feel out of place and distract from the overall story they were attempting to deliver. Additionally, lazy writing towards the end undermines the story's integrity. One glaring issue is the lack of explanation for the villain's power, which left me puzzled about their capabilities. Not to mention the fact that there is no explanation as to why the villain (Zawe Ashton) with one bangle is so damn powerful unless Ms. Marvel could just kick Captain Marvel's ass with ease. This inconsistency, coupled with others throughout the film, detracts from the overall experience. There are more inconsistencies I noticed but don't want to spoil any more than I may already have. While it may not live up to expectations, it still offers entertaining moments and showcases the strength of its diverse cast. Fans of the Marvel universe may find enjoyment in seeing beloved characters unite but be prepared for some disappointments along the way. And don't expect much along the lines of the "phase" overall strategy and direction since it is pretty devoid of that.

A few streamers have this for everyday pricing already.
