My quick rating - 7,1/10. Another one of the Oscar nominees this year and one I have no idea of what it is about. That scene on the boat during the storm is priceless. I'll digress. The movie presents a captivating story of a group of strangers who meet on a luxurious yacht that takes them on a journey they never imagined. The film cleverly examines the dynamics of the human psyche and how people react under extreme pressure and stress. The characters presented are all quite unique but one of the highlights of this flick is the outstanding performance by Woody Harrelson, who portrays the captain with a perfect balance of eccentric vulnerability. His interactions with his drunken Russian buddy Dmitry, played by Zlatko Buric, are hilarious, and their on-screen chemistry is remarkable. Director Ruben Östlund's choice to shoot most of the movie on location, including on a deserted island, adds to the realism and authenticity of the film. The movie's cinematography is also noteworthy, especially the stormy scenes at sea, which are visually stunning and provide a great platform for not only the inevitable wreck but also for some of the dark humor that this flick is full of. I can see that this style of humor is going to be pretty hit or miss for some people. By the end, it remains a fascinating and thought-provoking movie that will leave you amused with how the initial Instagram lifestyle which was presented devolves into by the ambiguous ending 147 minutes later.
