Unwelcome (2023)

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

My quick rating - 4,5/10. Another one marred by a stupid ending. All I could think of after it got rolling was a cross between Troll (1986) and Puppet Master. This horror flick is about a married couple, Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) and Jamie (Douglas Booth), who move to rural Ireland to start a new life after being targeted by a home invasion back in the city. However, their peaceful existence is soon shattered when they discover malevolent goblins lurking in the ancient woods at the edge of their garden. The movie starts off promisingly enough, with the couple enjoying the beauty of their new surroundings and the peace and quiet of rural life. However, as they begin to explore the woods, strange and terrifying things start to happen. The little trolls are quite goofy but their evil intentions are made clear early on. The movie does a good job of building tension as Maya and Jamie try to figure out what is going on and how to stop the creatures from wreaking havoc. I don't believe the makers of this one were sure on which way they wanted to lean between the horror and the comedy by how some of the scenes led into one another. Colm Meaney definitely provided much needed interest with his quirky, local character. Writer/director Jon Wright seemed very set on including the abducted homeowner narrative since it appears more than once. However, the movie is ultimately let down by a stupid and unsatisfying ending. Without giving too much away, it feels like Wright took the easy way out rather than coming up with a satisfying conclusion. Still an average horror movie that was just too confused with its own existence to be recommended and prevents it from being a much more than something to pass the time.

Unwelcome is not available for streaming. Sorry all, well, most of you.
