Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)

Updated: Dec 27, 2021

My quick rating - 6,3/10. A bit late here, and this one is already available on Bluray (click the poster below if you are interested). While the first Venom was quite a step away from the general superhero flicks that Marvel was giving us, this one takes an even stranger turn. The first Venom introduced us to a creature that needed to communicate with its host (again played wonderfully by Tom Hardy). This creature is really more of a monster that basically eats people's heads for snacks. And as violent as that all sounds, they have also again remained under PG-13 and that was a huge gripe the first time around for true fans of the comic. But the first movie made up for this lack of bloodshed and rage by looking incredible and having an interesting story to hold your attention. Here in part two, things look even better but the only story to be had that was worth anything was the integration of Venom with Hardy and the constant attempts to get along with in the same body. This does lead to some entertaining moments of course, but the things such as the bad guy (underused Woody Harrelson) and the romance that they allude to before blowing it off is a mere afterthought. Naomie Harris also plays a gifted woman named Shriek extremely well but is hardly explored enough. Quite a few parts like this are just thrown at you and then brushed away so the CGI can jump in. Maybe it just seemed that way because the last act of this one looks truly amazing. I would think you would be hard-pressed to find anyone that will not be impressed by the visuals here but all the human drama that was vital to making the first movie that good are now comedic interludes and vehicles to the next CGI scene. This is more pointing out the bad while hopefully, you do catch the good. Even being a fan of the comic, I am still fine with them toning it down to make it a bit more mainstream. I still had a good time with this one and I hate to do this, but just as the end of the first one gave you a little morsel to look forward to leading up to this movie, the end and bonus scene literally boost up the ratings in anticipation for what is in store. Hopefully, you can watch without knowing what I am talking about since I am not going to spoil it. But for any fan of the Marvel Universe overall, it is a BIG teaser of things to come. If you don't know and are in the discord, I am sure I'll be hearing from ya LOL. Enjoy.
