Wicked Games (2021)

My quick rating - 4.4/10. Having Cold Beer Friday as your production company is a sure way to grab my attention. They got a damn nice location for filming this flick, I will give them that. Wicked Games attempts to be a thrilling and intense horror film that takes audiences on a suspenseful journey, but instead ends up flailing about in its missed chances. Written & directed by Teddy Grennan, it offered potential right from the start with our protagonist. This tale revolves around the character of Harley, played by the talented Christine Spang, who is tough and strong-willed and comes along with her new boyfriend to his family’s mansion for the weekend of Halloween events. However, they soon realize that their quiet and fun vacation is about to get turned around with the arrival of the sinister group of masked intruders. The good news for them is that they attack one at a time, like those old kung fu flix, giving them a fighting chance.

Wicked Games is somewhat interesting, particularly in terms of how it brings Harley forth as a strong protagonist from the very start of this story. Her power and resilience are evident from early on, showcasing that this is no character you want or can afford to ignore or mean to toy with in any shape or form. Of course, it does seem that her appearance isn’t quite in keeping with her talents, although this is something that we, as viewers, are prepared to overlook. The arrival of these invaders in their polite introductions, one by one, allows Harley to use her intelligence, resourcefulness, and physical skills in order to defend herself against her assailants, which brings an interesting and exciting element to this film that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.

Of course, these masked freaks add to the sense of danger that happens unexpectedly with their presence, which is rather creepy. As Harley utilizes her intelligence and strategic thinking to outwit her adversaries in the survival game forced by them onto the poor characters, the dark, atmospheric setting of the family estate during Halloween serves as a perfect setting for the chilling unfolding events. It is secluded, and this seclusion is made very real with the use of lighting, shadows, and camera angles that generally build up the ambiance of dread. Apart from the action and moments of suspense, Wicked Games conveys an inspiring message about empowerment. Harley's strength and determination are inspiring - even when all hope seems lost under strong adversities, there might well be an inner source to draw upon to fight back and overcome one's fears.

Despite the many positives, there are several negatives. Firstly, the storyline, even if it was thrilling and packed with action, needed to explore the motivations of the masked burglars in depth. Furthermore, other character developments, apart from Harley, could have enhanced the plot. The silly attack method and the absolutely manufactured twist were both unnecessary yet still forced into the whole narrative. So, overall, with the amount of action, the strength of the message, and the great female protagonist, it offers a slightly entertaining experience about what one woman can do in the face of adversity, as long as you can look past the ridiculous ways in which she gets where she gets.
