My quick rating - 4,4/10. Having Cold Beer Friday as your production company is a sure way to grab my attention. They got a damn nice location for filming this flick, I will give them that. The flick attempts to be a thrilling and intense horror film that takes audiences on a suspenseful journey but instead ends up flailing about in its missed chances. Written & directed by Teddy Grennan, it had potential from our main character's introduction. The story centers around Harley (Christine Spang), a tough and resilient woman who accompanies her newfound boyfriend to his family's estate for a Halloween weekend. Little do they know, their peaceful getaway is about to be disrupted by a menacing group of masked intruders. As the night unfolds, they are forced into playing a twisted and deadly game orchestrated by the intruders. The good news for them is they attack one at a time like those old kung fu flix giving them a fighting chance. One of the most captivating aspects of "Wicked Games" is the way it establishes Harley as a formidable protagonist from the beginning. Her strength and determination are showcased early on, making it clear that she is not a character to be underestimated. Granted, her appearance doesn't match the skills she is given, but we let that slide as viewers. As the intruders attack so politely in staggered succession, Harley uses her wit, resourcefulness, and physical prowess to fight back and turn the tables on her assailants. This aspect of the film creates an engaging and thrilling dynamic, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. The tension is built throughout the movie at a pace that really makes sure you realize there is more to what is going on. The masked freaks, each with their unique and eerie presence, add to the sense of impending danger and unpredictability. The game they force upon the characters becomes a battle of survival, as Harley utilizes her intelligence and strategic thinking to outwit her adversaries. The dark and atmospheric setting of the family estate during Halloween provides the perfect backdrop for the chilling events that unfold. The seclusion feels very real to help along with the use of lighting, shadows, and camera angles adding an overall sense of dread. In addition to its thrilling action and suspense, "Wicked Games" also delivers a message of empowerment. Harley's resilience and determination serve as an inspiration, showing that even in the face of extreme adversity, one can find the strength to fight back and overcome their fears. Despite its strengths, there are quite a few flaws. The plot, while engaging and intense, could have delved deeper into the motivations and backstory of the masked intruders. Additionally, some character development beyond Harley's arc could have added more depth to the overall narrative. The silly attack method and the absolute manufactured twist were both unnecessary yet still forced into the whole narrative. Overall, with a strong female lead, decent action sequences, and a powerful message, it delivers a marginally entertaining trip into what one woman can accomplish in the face of adversity. As long as you can put aside the absurdity of how she gets to it.
