Mrs. Davis: Season 1 (2023)

Updated: May 27, 2023

My quick rating - 7,5/10. Sister Simone (Betty Gilpin) partners with her ex-boyfriend Wiley (Jake McDorman) on a globe-spanning journey to destroy Mrs. Davis, a powerful artificial intelligence. This show is a tough one to explain. It has a bit of everything going for it. The most basic explanation I can give is Jesus vs A.I. The whole show is completely bonkers that was entertaining right from the start. They really had no idea on how to subtly just go into anything here, so if there needed to be a bit of violence, they went WELL over the top to convey that and in the next scene will have you actually laughing at the silliness of something else. It is very well-organized mayhem holding something so bizarre together and making it flow from episode to episode. One example would be Jesus and I am referring to Jesus Christ, but he goes by Jay (Andy McQueen) works in a diner, and gets visits from people who are in some intense circumstance so he just serves them. The list of strange quirks goes on and on so I'll leave that be. The cast is unique, to say the least and put together quite well. The pacing is nicely balanced but as I mentioned, when it needs to be an action scene, it pushes the envelope to get the scene's impact across. The way it is geared towards tech people while constantly also making fun of said technology is done in a very amusing style. So watching people become "proxies" very Mrs. Davis each time adds another layer of instant comedy depending on who they chose. You really have to have an open mind to appreciate this one for everything they are doing. I felt like I was watching something akin to a modernized Monty Python and the Holy Grail in their approach to a secular comedy and if you haven't seen that movie, put it on your watchlist immediately. A really enjoyable show that definitely proves that not everyone in Hollywood is out of ideas quite yet. I don't really think this one needs a second season but on the other hand, seeing Gilpin return to this character is fine with me since she does a spectacular job in this show.
