Natty Knocks

Updated: Oct 14, 2023

My quick rating - 5.1/10. This flick ended up being a capable homage to 1980s horror that delivers both nostalgic delights and fresh, inventive scares. Directed by Dwight H. Little, this film pays tribute to the classic babysitter horror trope while infusing it with a deliciously meta twist. Little has had his hands involved in some pretty good productions in the past and clearly did learn a few tricks from them. Set against the eerie backdrop of Halloween night, the story revolves around Britt (played with poise and intensity by Charlotte Fountain-Jardim), who finds herself babysitting a group of kids in a seemingly normal suburban home. However, normalcy takes a dark turn when they discover they are being hunted by Abner Honeywell (the brilliantly portrayed Bill Moseley), the deeply disturbed son of B-movie horror legend "Natty Knocks." What ensues is a relentless game of survival, filled with suspense and unexpected twists. I thought what set this film apart was its ability to seamlessly blend classic horror elements with a self-aware, meta-horror vibe. Abner's trauma, stemming from his mother's 1960s B-slasher films, adds layers of depth to his character, making him a unique and haunting antagonist. His work as a police officer in the unsuspecting town just worked so well. Moseley's performance is nothing short of mesmerizing; he embodies the character's anguish and menace with chilling authenticity. The movie also cleverly incorporates a detective angle, as the resourceful kids embark on a quest to unveil the mystery behind the masked slasher. This element not only adds a sense of intrigue but also engages the audience, inviting them to participate in the unraveling of the plot. The young cast delivers decent performances, injecting the film with energy and relatability. Their chemistry and camaraderie create a genuine emotional connection, making the audience genuinely care about their fates. The presence of 80s icons Danielle Harris and Robert Englund further enhances the movie's appeal, appealing to fans of the era and adding an extra layer of nostalgia. I liked how they were able to evoke the Halloween spirit. The atmosphere is richly imbued with the essence of the season, enveloping viewers in a world of spooky ambiance and eerie tension. The cinematography and production design flawlessly capture the aesthetics of 1980s horror films, from the vivid colors to the meticulously crafted set pieces. It's a love letter to the golden era of slasher films, well-directed and impeccably acted. With its compelling characters, clever narrative twists, and nostalgic charm, this movie stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of 1980s horror. Whether you're a fan of classic slashers or simply seeking a heart-racing #Shocktober experience, this flick will foot the bill.

Plenty of streaming choices ranging from $2.99-6.99 with Amazon being the cheapest.
