The Night Agent: Season 1 (2023)

Updated: May 14, 2023

My quick rating - 7,2/10. Shows like this are just made to be binged. They definitely put their thinking caps on to come up with a conspiracy to kill the president this deeply. Well to the point of unbelievable but then again, that is what shows like this are for. You have to suspend belief to get anything out of it especially when it is running at such a high pace throughout each episode. Gabriel Basso (Peter)does a really nice job as our "hero" who actually has a meaningless job (if such a thing exists) in the white house answering a certain phone line designed for top-secret calls for routing elsewhere. This number is not one that is supposed to ring often if at all but for the sake of the show, it happens and he gets the call of a lifetime. On the other end is Luciane Buchanan (Rose) who has witnessed the murder of her family members and has been instructed to call that number. What follows is a very convoluted mess that will turn you away if you either get confused easily or don't like things to be so far-fetched. Speaking of, Rose doesn't seem to be very affected by what transpires in this one so that is either not the best acting, or writing. You can decide. As far as how it looks, I would say pretty top-notch in different on sight locations and realistic-looking settings. As far as the driving force, the action is very well done and doesn't succumb to turning Peter into anything superhuman. He doesn't come off like James Bond or Bruce Lee in either of their aspects but stays more down to Earth in who he is. Part of that is involved in his backstory which you will be privy to early on and in how it connects to the overlying story. I'll leave that for your discovery since it is paced out through episode 10. I would say Netflix has another winner and easily ends with a setup for future seasons. Check it out if you are not too bothered by the flaws mentioned here. I easily looked past them to enjoy it.
